US President Donald Trump said he plans to visit China in April to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, and he said Xi is expected to visit the United States later this year. Speaking to reporters, Trump said the U.S.-China relationship is “very good right now,” but he did not give exact travel dates.
Trump also described the planned visits as part of ongoing direct engagement between the two leaders, including a recent phone call and mutual invitations to travel. Details about the schedule, location of the meeting, and specific agenda items were not provided in the remarks reported.
What Trump said about April
In comments reported from Washington, Trump said, “I’ll be visiting President Xi Jinping in April,” and added that Xi would come to the U.S. “later in the year.” Trump said he was looking forward to Xi’s visit and again described the relationship as “very good right now.” The report said Trump did not specify the exact dates of his China trip.
A separate report of an interview said Trump told NBC News he would visit China in April and that Xi would visit the White House “toward the end of the year.” In that interview, Trump emphasized the importance of each leader having a good relationship with the other and described the U.S. and China as “the two most powerful countries in the world.”
Phone call focused on trade
The same report said Trump and Xi had a 90-minute phone call on February 4. According to the report, Trump said the call focused almost entirely on trade and did not touch on other geopolitical issues such as Iran and Ukraine.
After the call, Trump wrote on Truth Social that it “resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries,” according to the report. The report also said Trump wrote that Xi invited the First Lady and him to visit China and that Trump reciprocated.
How China described the exchange
China’s state media Xinhua reported that during the call, Xi said he attaches great importance to China-U.S. relations, according to the report. Xinhua also reported that Xi and Trump had “sound communication” over the past year and had a “successful meeting in Busan,” which the report said Xinhua described as charting the direction for China-U.S. relations.
Separately, the report said a readout from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Xi called for the U.S. and China to seek “win-win results” in the spirit of equality and respect for each other’s concerns. The same readout said Xi urged Washington to remove “negative measures” taken against China, according to the report.
What remains unclear
While Trump said he expects to meet Xi in April and host Xi later this year, the reports did not provide a detailed timeline or confirm exact dates for either trip. The reports also did not spell out what topics Trump and Xi will prioritize during the April meeting beyond Trump’s description of trade as the focus of their recent call.
For now, Trump’s public comments point to upcoming leader-to-leader talks and continued direct contact between Washington and Beijing, with trade described as a central issue in recent discussions.
