A modern, high-tech corporate office lobby with blurred futuristic elements representing an artificial intelligence and robotics company.

Caitlin Kalinowski resigns from her leadership position at OpenAI following the company’s controversial new agreement with the United States Department of Defense. As the leader of the firm’s robotics initiatives, Kalinowski announced her departure on social platforms X and LinkedIn, pointing to ethical concerns regarding the potential military applications of advanced AI systems. Her exit highlights internal and public friction over how artificial intelligence should be utilized in national security.

Publications describe her exact title slightly differently. NewsBytes states she served as the head of the robotics team, while Fortune reports she led hardware and robotics operations under the vice president of research. Meanwhile, the Times of India identifies her role as the head of robotics and consumer hardware. Regardless of her specific title, she stepped down after raising alarms about the rapid implementation of a government contract that would deploy the organization’s technology on classified military networks.

Ethical Concerns Regarding the Pentagon Agreement

Kalinowski explained her reasoning publicly, noting that leaving the company was a difficult choice. She stated that while artificial intelligence plays a crucial part in national security, she worried about the lack of sufficient deliberation regarding the deployment of these tools. She specifically highlighted the dangers of domestic surveillance lacking judicial oversight and the potential for lethal autonomous weapons operating without human authorization.

According to the Times of India, Kalinowski expressed that the military agreement moved forward too quickly and without established guardrails, describing the situation as a governance issue that was rushed. Despite her strong stance, she maintained her decision was based on principles rather than personal conflicts. In her statement, she emphasized her deep respect for Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and her colleagues, adding that she remained proud of the technology they built together.

The Anthropic Collapse and OpenAI’s Contract

The controversial defense agreement emerged after the Pentagon’s negotiations with a rival artificial intelligence firm, Anthropic, broke down. Reports indicate Anthropic demanded strict contractual limits to prevent its technology from being used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weaponry. Following Anthropic’s refusal to compromise on these safeguards, the government ended the discussions.

According to Fortune and NewsBytes, the defense department then labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk. OpenAI subsequently stepped in to secure its own military deal. The timing faced significant backlash, prompting Sam Altman to admit the partnership rollout appeared opportunistic. While most sources refer to the government entity involved as the Department of Defense, the Times of India specifically refers to the agency as the Department of War.

OpenAI Defends Its Military Partnership

In response to the resignation, an official OpenAI spokesperson confirmed Kalinowski’s departure and issued a statement defending the defense contract. The organization asserted that the military agreement provides a practical framework for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in national security contexts.

The company further stated it established clear boundaries, prohibiting the use of its models for domestic surveillance operations and autonomous weapon systems. Acknowledging the public scrutiny, the spokesperson noted the company understands people hold strong opinions on these matters and promised to maintain open discussions with its workforce, government officials, civil society, and global communities.

Broader Company Exodus and Public Backlash

Kalinowski’s departure is not an isolated event. Max Schwarzer, the vice president of research, also left the organization mere hours after the military partnership was finalized. Schwarzer, who played a key role in post-training development for advanced models including GPT-5 and the o1 series, announced he was taking a position at Anthropic. He noted on social media that many of his most trusted peers had transitioned to the rival firm.

The controversy triggered a massive consumer reaction. Following the contract announcement, users uninstalled the ChatGPT application in staggering numbers. According to reports, approximately 1.5 million subscribers abandoned the service due to fears the military agreement failed to protect citizens from AI-enabled surveillance. During this period, Anthropic’s Claude application experienced a popularity surge, climbing to the top of the App Store charts.

Professional Background of Caitlin Kalinowski

Before joining OpenAI in November 2024, Kalinowski built an extensive career leading hardware development at major technology corporations. At Meta Platforms, she spent over two years overseeing the creation of the company’s augmented reality glasses, previously known as Project Nazare and later unveiled as Orion.

Prior to her work on augmented reality, she spent more than nine years leading virtual reality hardware initiatives at Meta’s Oculus division. Her engineering experience also includes nearly six years at Apple, where she worked as a product design engineer contributing to the development of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air computers.
