The conflict between the United States and Iran has sharply escalated following a series of retaliatory Iranian drone strikes targeting American military and diplomatic facilities across the region. Over the course of three days, unmanned aerial vehicles have struck locations in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. These incidents, which have resulted in the deaths of six American service members, come as a direct response to a joint military action launched by the U.S. and Israel against Iran over the weekend.

The expanding wave of Iranian drone strikes has forced U.S. installations across the Gulf to go on high alert. The violence follows “Operation Epic Fury,” described as a massive and ongoing military action initiated by the United States and Israel during the early morning hours of Saturday, February 28.

Deadly Strike on US Troops in Kuwait

The casualties occurred on Sunday morning when a direct strike hit a civilian port in Kuwait, killing six American service members. According to U.S. officials, an Iranian drone flew slow and low to the ground, effectively evading American air defenses before impacting the Shuaiba port just after 9 a.m. local time. The assault occurred rapidly and without any warning sirens, leaving troops with no time to evacuate or secure themselves in a bunker.

Descriptions of the targeted facility differ. According to a source familiar with the situation, the drone struck a makeshift operations center, which was described as a triple-wide trailer containing office space. In contrast, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the strike hit a “tactical operation center that was fortified,” confirming that a single projectile penetrated U.S. air defenses.

Hours after the explosion, the structure continued to smolder. The interior was completely blackened, with walls blown outward and sections of the building peeling away. While U.S. Central Command initially reported three fatalities, dozens of personnel were at the site, and several troops remained unaccounted for in the immediate aftermath. Rescue efforts were prolonged due to the ongoing fires. By Monday afternoon, a Central Command release noted that forces had recently recovered the remains of two previously unaccounted for service members, officially raising the death toll to six. The military has withheld the identities of the deceased troops while their families are being notified.

CIA Facility Targeted in Saudi Arabia

The military confrontation expanded on Monday when the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, was targeted. The exact nature of the strike varies among reports. Sources familiar with the matter reported that a suspected Iranian drone targeted the specific CIA facility located within the embassy, an act that could be viewed as a significant symbolic triumph for the Islamic Republic as it strikes at American interests throughout the Middle East. Meanwhile, the Saudi Arabian defense ministry stated that the embassy compound was struck by two drones, resulting in minor fires and some material damage.

In response to the incident, the U.S. mission in Saudi Arabia cited the attack and advised American citizens to steer clear of the embassy until further notice. Consequently, all routine and emergency services appointments for U.S. citizens were canceled for Tuesday. The security threat also extended beyond the capital. A security alert warned of an imminent drone threat over Dhahran, expressly instructing people not to visit the U.S. Consulate there. American citizens in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dhahran have been directed to remain indoors.

Drone Hits US Consulate in Dubai

The retaliatory campaign continued into Tuesday evening when a drone impacted the area around the U.S. consulate in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The consulate is located approximately an hour away from the U.S. embassy in the UAE. During live television coverage, it was reported that the consulate was actively on fire, and social media footage captured black smoke billowing from the vicinity.

Subsequent reports provided conflicting details regarding the exact point of impact and the severity of the blaze. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the press pool that the drone struck a parking lot next to the main building and confirmed that all personnel were accounted for safely. While initial reporting indicated the consulate building itself caught fire, the Dubai media office stated that emergency teams had effectively contained a small fire located near the consulate, with no injuries reported. Roughly 45 minutes later, Dubai authorities announced the fire was completely put out, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring public safety and security. Meanwhile, Iran’s state broadcaster, IRIB, claimed direct responsibility for the incident, reporting that an Iranian drone successfully struck the U.S. consulate.
