Tesla’s long-awaited Apple CarPlay support is still in the works, but a reported compatibility problem involving Apple Maps and Tesla’s own navigation software has slowed the rollout. The delay centers on how navigation directions behave when autonomous driving features are in use, according to reporting attributed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
CarPlay is expected to run inside a window within Tesla’s existing infotainment interface rather than replacing it, which means drivers could potentially view Tesla’s navigation and Apple’s navigation at the same time. In testing, Tesla reportedly found that turn-by-turn directions did not sync properly between Tesla’s maps app and Apple Maps during autonomous driving, creating a risk of mismatched guidance on screen.
What reportedly caused the delay
According to Gurman’s report as summarized by MacRumors, Tesla asked Apple to make engineering changes to Apple Maps to address the syncing problem. Drive Tesla Canada similarly reports that Tesla requested a fix from Apple after identifying a compatibility issue between Apple Maps and Tesla’s in-house mapping software during early testing.
The issue described in both reports involves turn-by-turn guidance and how it aligns when Tesla’s autonomous driving is active. MacRumors notes the concern that this mismatch could confuse drivers if both navigation experiences are visible side by side in the Tesla interface.
iOS 26 updates and adoption questions
Gurman’s report says Apple agreed to ship a fix in an iOS 26 update, but adoption of iOS 26 has reportedly been slower than usual. Apple said iOS 26 is running on 74% of iPhones released in the last four years, compared with 76% for iOS 18 by January 2025, according to the figures cited in the report.
Drive Tesla Canada adds a key timing detail: it reports the patch did not arrive with the official iOS 26 launch and instead came later in a security and patch update after the September 2025 release. That report also says it is unclear how many iPhone users have installed the later patch that includes the CarPlay-related fix, even though iOS 26 overall is on 74% of iPhones activated in the last four years.
Because of that uncertainty, Drive Tesla Canada reports Tesla is hesitant to deploy CarPlay broadly if some drivers might still be on versions that could trigger the syncing issue. In other words, the fix may exist, but Tesla reportedly wants confidence that enough iPhone users have the right software update before it flips the switch.
Tesla’s timeline and what’s been said publicly
Tesla had previously aimed to add CarPlay by the end of 2025, according to Gurman’s reporting as relayed by MacRumors. Drive Tesla Canada says a launch could come soon but notes Tesla has not confirmed an official rollout.
MacRumors frames the push for CarPlay as a shift for Tesla and CEO Elon Musk, noting they had long ignored customer requests to bring CarPlay to Tesla vehicles. The same report describes CarPlay as a feature seen as a potential sales driver, even as Tesla’s infotainment system is widely viewed as strong on its own.
What Tesla owners can do now
Drive Tesla Canada suggests that Tesla owners who want CarPlay should make sure they install the latest iOS update on their iPhone in preparation. For now, the reported delay remains tied to navigation compatibility and the pace of iOS 26 patch adoption, rather than a canceled plan to support CarPlay.
