Apple kicked off a fresh round of software testing on February 16, releasing the first developer betas for iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, watchOS 26.4, tvOS 26.4, visionOS 26.4, and HomePod 26.4. The rollout arrives less than a week following the public launch of version 26.3 across Apple’s device ecosystem.
Registered developers can now download the beta releases through the Settings app by navigating to the General section and selecting Software Update. Public beta testers are expected to gain access within the next week or two, following Apple’s typical release pattern.
What to Expect from iOS 26.4
The 26.4 update cycle is anticipated to bring more substantial feature additions compared to the 26.3 release, which primarily focused on bug fixes and security improvements. Among the expected additions are new emoji characters including trombone, treasure chest, orca, landslide, and Bigfoot.
Apple is also working to include optimizations in preparation for new product announcements expected soon. Developers have been encouraged to build and test their applications using Xcode 26.4 beta to take advantage of advancements in the latest software development kits.
Siri Upgrade Faces Delays
The most significant feature expected in iOS 26.4 was a major overhaul of Siri, which Apple first unveiled at WWDC 2024. The revamped assistant was designed to offer smarter, more personalized functionality with deeper app controls. However, Apple has reportedly encountered issues during internal testing that could push some or all of these Siri enhancements to iOS 26.5 or even iOS 27.
Despite the delays, users might still see some new Siri capabilities in version 26.4, including tools for generating images and searching the web. The phased rollout of artificial intelligence features reflects Apple’s cautious approach to deploying its much-anticipated AI improvements.
Developer Testing Now Underway
The beta versions released include updates for all major Apple platforms. Alongside iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 for iPhones and iPads, Apple has made available macOS Tahoe 26.4 for Mac computers, watchOS 26.4 for Apple Watch, tvOS 26.4 for Apple TV, visionOS 26.4 for Vision Pro, and HomePod 26.4 for HomePod devices.
Developers who maintain accounts at developer.apple.com can opt into beta updates by accessing Settings, then General, followed by Software Update and Beta Updates, where they can select Developer Beta. Apple has cautioned that these early versions are intended strictly for testing purposes and are not stable enough for everyday use on primary devices.
The 26.3 updates, which just became available to the public last week, introduced features such as a Transfer to Android option and cellular location limits. With the new beta cycle beginning so quickly afterward, Apple appears to be maintaining an aggressive development schedule as it works toward feature-rich updates later this year.
The company will likely continue releasing subsequent beta versions approximately every two weeks until the final public release of iOS 26.4 and its companion updates.
