OpenAI is undergoing a significant leadership reorganization as multiple top executives step back for health reasons while the artificial intelligence company prepares for a potential initial public offering. In a series of recent internal announcements, the tech giant confirmed major changes to its C-suite. The OpenAI leadership reshuffle includes temporary and permanent departures of key figures, alongside the reassignment of its longtime chief operating officer. These executive changes arrive during a critical period for the company, which recently achieved a staggering $852 billion valuation after raising $122 billion in funding.
Fidji Simo Takes Medical Leave
One of the most notable changes involves Fidji Simo, a central figure in the executive team. According to an internal memo, Simo is taking a medical leave of absence lasting several weeks to manage a worsening neuroimmune condition. Simo, who was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome in 2019, shared that the past month has been particularly difficult for her health.
There are varying descriptions of Simo’s exact role across different reports. According to Axios, she is the leader in AGI deployment, while LiveMint refers to her as the CEO of AGI development, and Business Insider identifies her as the CEO of Applications. Regardless of her specific title, Simo has been a driving force behind the product and business strategies at the company. Before joining OpenAI, she served as the CEO of Instacart and led the Facebook app.
In recent weeks, she has played a major role in the push to streamline the company’s sprawling mix of services into a single unified application that would bring together its chatbot, coding tool, and web browser. Furthermore, Simo recently informed employees that the organization would prioritize core operations and avoid being distracted by side projects, alongside announcing the recent acquisition of the TBPN talk show.
In her communication to staff, Simo explained that she had previously postponed medical evaluations and therapies to focus entirely on her work. However, she acknowledged that she had pushed herself too far and now needs new interventions to stabilize her health. During her absence, OpenAI President Greg Brockman will step in to oversee the product division.
CMO Kate Rouch Steps Down
The leadership overhaul also includes a major change in the marketing department. Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch is officially stepping down from her role to focus on her recovery from late-stage breast cancer. Rouch was diagnosed roughly a year and a half ago, shortly after joining the company.
In a public statement, Rouch expressed her deep love for the job and the team, which kept her working while undergoing intense cancer treatments. She noted that she has now reached her physical limits and must prioritize her health. Rouch hopes to return in a different, more narrowly scoped position when her health permits.
To fill the gap, former Meta CMO Gary Briggs will serve as the interim marketing chief. Briggs, who previously covered for Rouch during a prior leave, will also lead the search for a permanent replacement.
COO Brad Lightcap Transitions to Special Projects
Alongside the health-related leaves, the company is shifting responsibilities among its active executives. Brad Lightcap, the longtime Chief Operating Officer, is moving into a new position focused on special projects. In this new capacity, Lightcap will report directly to CEO Sam Altman.
Lightcap’s new role centers on expanding enterprise software sales. This includes spearheading a prospective partnership with private equity firms, an initiative that reportedly carries a pre-money valuation of $10 billion. Frontier AI labs often partner with private equity firms to build reliance on their models, expecting these firms to become major clients.
Redistribution of Executive Duties
With Lightcap transitioning to new projects, his previous duties are being redistributed. Denise Dresser, the Chief Revenue Officer and former CEO of Slack, will take over the majority of Lightcap’s former responsibilities. She will retain her current title and continue reporting directly to Simo.
The restructuring efforts extend to other areas of the business as well. Chief Officer Jason Kwon, Financial Officer Friar, and Dresser will work together to jointly oversee the company’s operations. Additionally, government initiatives and the international expansion programs will transition under Kwon’s strategic division.
Preparing for a Potential IPO
This dramatic C-suite overhaul comes at a pivotal moment. The organization is actively preparing for a potential initial public offering. The business is also exploring new revenue streams, which includes testing advertising within its popular ChatGPT platform, all while facing intense competition from industry rivals.
Executive turnover is not entirely new for the organization. CEO Sam Altman was briefly removed in late 2023, leading to a wave of high-profile departures that mainly consisted of original board members. In 2025, several AI researchers also left for Meta’s Superintelligence Labs.
Despite this history and the current significant executive turnover, the enterprise remains focused on its massive global footprint. A company spokesperson stated that the leadership team is well-positioned to maintain continuity and momentum. The company continues to prioritize advancing frontier research, powering enterprise use cases, and growing its user base, which now stands at nearly one billion users worldwide.
