Meta has officially announced a comprehensive plan to deploy four new generations of its internal artificial intelligence processors by the end of 2027. This newly unveiled lineup of Meta custom AI chips represents a major step in the technology giant’s strategy to power its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence workloads. By designing its own silicon, the company aims to efficiently support generative artificial intelligence features, recommendation algorithms, and content ranking systems across massively popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The ambitious hardware roadmap introduces four distinct processors within the company’s Meta Training and Inference Accelerator initiative. These new processors are designated as the MTIA 300, MTIA 400, MTIA 450, and MTIA 500. With this major hardware rollout, Meta firmly establishes its position alongside other industry leaders like Alphabet, Microsoft, Apple, and Google in the exclusive group of technology companies prioritizing vertical integration and manufacturing custom silicon at an enormous scale.

Driving Generative AI and Inference Workloads

The primary focus of this new processor batch is to handle inference tasks rather than the initial training of artificial intelligence models. Inference refers to the computationally heavy operational process where an artificial intelligence model actively answers user inquiries or generates responses, similar to how applications like ChatGPT function. While Meta has historically faced challenges in its long-standing goal of creating a processor capable of training massive generative models from scratch, the company has found substantial success in optimizing these continuous inference operations.

Renee Ji Song, Meta’s vice president of engineering, emphasized this strategic direction. During a recent interview, Song stated, “We are witnessing a surge in inference demand right now, and that is our primary focus.” Tailoring these processors precisely to the company’s unique data processing requirements allows engineers to create designs that consume far less power while remaining highly cost-effective compared to standard, general-purpose alternatives.

A Staggered Rollout for Data Centers

The deployment of these four processors will occur in a staggered timeline to match the company’s rapidly scaling infrastructure needs. The first processor in the lineup, the MTIA 300, is already operational. It is currently in production and actively supporting the company’s complex ranking and recommendation systems. The remaining three models are scheduled for release throughout this year and continuing into 2027.

Meta has also engineered a complete, customized hardware ecosystem around the MTIA 400, which remains on track for data center deployment. This complete system is roughly equivalent in size to multiple server racks and incorporates a specialized variant of liquid cooling technology to manage thermal output. Moving forward, the final two processors—the MTIA 450 and MTIA 500—are explicitly designed to handle advanced inference tasks at scale.

To keep up with the immense data demands of social media platforms, Meta plans to launch a new processor every six months. Regarding this aggressive release schedule, Song remarked, “This reflects the pace at which our infrastructure is being developed.”

Navigating External Partnerships and Supply Chains

Despite pushing heavily into internal hardware development, Meta continues to rely on external industry partnerships to bring these processors to life. The company collaborates with Broadcom to assist with specific, undisclosed aspects of the chip designs. Additionally, Meta has partnered with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to physically produce the processors.

This push for custom silicon does not mean an immediate end to the company’s relationship with traditional processor manufacturers. In fact, just weeks before rolling out the new MTIA lineup, Meta signed significant agreements with both Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices. In February, the company committed to procuring tens of billions of dollars worth of third-party processors. Nvidia graphics processing units continue to dominate the computationally intensive task of training new artificial intelligence models, forcing Meta to balance its custom inference processors with massive external hardware purchases to meet immediate computing demands.

Financial Impact and Long-Term Strategy

Developing and deploying these custom processors requires an extraordinary financial commitment. Earlier in January, Meta projected its overall capital expenditures for the current year to fall between $115 billion and $135 billion. A substantial portion of this budget is dedicated to rapidly increasing the number of data centers required to keep their applications operational and responsive.

Ultimately, this dual hardware strategy serves both immediate and long-term goals. While the company continues to spend billions on third-party accelerators to meet today’s compute demands, the custom MTIA processors offer a pathway to reduce long-term dependency on external suppliers. Because inference represents a continuous and growing operational expense, running these tailored chips is expected to yield substantial financial savings and efficiency gains over time.
