Alphabet’s Google is currently in negotiations with Marvell Technology to develop two brand-new artificial intelligence processors. According to a recent report published by The Information on Sunday, which cited two individuals familiar with the private discussions, this potential partnership aims to help Google run its AI models much more efficiently. As the global demand for robust artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to accelerate, the prospect of new Google and Marvell AI chips signals a highly strategic move to strengthen the search giant’s internal computing capabilities.

The ongoing discussions between the two technology corporations focus specifically on two distinct pieces of hardware. The first proposed processor is a dedicated memory processing unit that is designed to integrate seamlessly with Google’s existing Tensor Processing Units, which are widely known as TPUs. The second processor under active discussion is a completely new TPU that is crafted exclusively for AI inference processing. Inference is the critical, user-facing phase of artificial intelligence where trained models actively process prompts and serve end users, rather than the initial, resource-heavy phase of learning from raw data.

If the proposed deal moves forward, Marvell Technology would assume a dedicated design-services role for the tech giant. This proposed collaborative arrangement is highly similar to the existing relationship that Google already maintains with MediaTek, a company that recently helped design Google’s latest Ironwood TPU. While the two companies are actively negotiating the terms, the sources clearly noted that they have not yet signed a finalized contract. Because custom semiconductor development requires extensive engineering and testing timelines, any resulting hardware products from this collaboration would likely be years away from entering full-scale production.

Expanding the Custom Silicon Supply Chain

Expanding its core roster of hardware partners appears to be a major immediate priority for Google. The discussions with Marvell emerge just days after Google officially extended its long-term TPU and networking agreement with Broadcom, officially locking in that crucial partnership through the year 2031. By actively attempting to bring Marvell into the fold alongside its existing partners, Google is clearly signaling a strong intent to diversify its vital supply chain. Relying heavily on a single supplier presents a significant operational risk in the modern technology landscape. Securing multiple highly capable partners ensures long-term stability for the world’s most demanding artificial intelligence workloads.

Should these active negotiations eventually result in a formally signed agreement, Marvell would officially become the third major design partner in Google’s custom silicon supply chain, joining both Broadcom and MediaTek. This targeted expansion reflects a much broader industry shift where inference processing is rapidly becoming the dominant computing cost for major technology companies. Hyperscalers like Google are now routinely spending billions of dollars on custom-designed chips to slash their operational costs while simultaneously elevating overall system performance for their global user base.

The Booming Market for AI Data Center Hardware

The financial stakes in the custom processor industry are undeniably massive. The custom Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) market for artificial intelligence data centers is currently experiencing explosive, unprecedented growth. Industry projections indicate that this specific custom silicon sector will expand by a staggering 45 percent in 2026 alone. Looking further ahead, the broader custom ASIC market is fully expected to achieve a 27 percent compound annual growth rate, eventually reaching an estimated total overall value of $118 billion by the year 2033.

The widespread success of these custom processors is directly tied to Google’s broader financial trajectory. The sales and rentals of TPUs directly through the Google Cloud platform have steadily evolved into a primary key driver of growth for the company’s overall cloud computing revenue. As the parent company Alphabet pours massive amounts of capital into artificial intelligence infrastructure, actively demonstrating the long-term profitability of these TPUs is essential to clearly show investors that these heavy AI investments are successfully generating tangible, reliable financial returns.

Challenging Dominant Players in the GPU Space

A central underlying motivation behind Google’s aggressive hardware expansion strategy is to establish its proprietary Tensor Processing Units as a highly viable, everyday alternative to Nvidia’s currently dominant Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Google has been pushing exceptionally hard to capture more of the global processing market and effectively offer cost-effective hardware substitutes for enterprise organizations that prioritize both enhanced processing performance and elevated security. By heavily investing in specialized hardware, Google aims to reduce its reliance on external GPU manufacturers and directly control its technological future.

For Marvell Technology, securing a finalized Google inference TPU contract would represent a massive validation of its current industry standing. Successfully closing the semiconductor deal would firmly cement Marvell’s widespread reputation as the second-most important custom AI chip designer operating globally today. The company is already successfully leveraging its deep, specialized expertise in high-speed interconnects to help its enterprise clients thoroughly optimize both their operational costs and their baseline computing performance.

Marvell’s rapidly growing influence in the semiconductor sector is further highlighted by its other recent major partnerships. Just recently, dominant chipmaker Nvidia made a massive $2 billion strategic financial investment in Marvell Technology. This major investment quickly established a deep working collaboration through the NVLink Fusion framework, where Marvell is now set to carefully create custom XPUs and NVLink-compatible networking technology that integrates flawlessly with Nvidia’s existing hardware architecture. This parallel technology deal effectively brings Marvell even deeper into the absolute core of the global artificial intelligence hardware ecosystem.
