Meta has officially announced its latest major expansion in the wearable technology market, introducing two new models of Ray-Ban smart glasses built specifically for daily prescription wearers . Developed in collaboration with long-time hardware partner EssilorLuxottica, the new eyewear aims to seamlessly combine everyday vision correction with advanced artificial intelligence features . The announcement signals a significant shift toward mainstream hardware adoption, prioritizing users who rely on their glasses for all-day comfort and essential visibility .

The new frames will be officially available starting April 14 at optical retailers and traditional prescription eyewear channels across the United States and select international markets . Pricing for the new models starts at $499, placing them in a premium but accessible tier for high-end prescription eyewear . By targeting traditional eyewear channels rather than strictly consumer electronics stores, the tech giant hopes to bridge the gap between high-tech digital gadgets and essential daily medical accessories .

Two New Styles for Prescription Lenses

The upcoming launch features two distinct frame styles designed to accommodate different face shapes, aesthetic preferences, and size requirements . The first option is a more rounded frame style known as the Scriber . The second option is a rectangular design available in both standard and large sizes . There is a notable discrepancy across industry reports regarding the exact name of the rectangular model: TechCrunch refers to it as the “Blayzer,” whereas reports from Bloomberg, 9to5Google, The Verge, and Tom’s Guide identify the name as “Blazer” .

Regardless of the spelling, these new models are heavily engineered for extended daily wear . The company proudly claims that these are the most comfortable glasses it has ever designed, specifically because they address the common physical pain points of all-day use . They feature flexible overextension hinges to prevent temple pinching, interchangeable nose pads for varied bridge sizes, and temple tips that an optician can safely adjust for a perfectly personalized fit . While existing smart frames already support the addition of prescription lenses, these new models were built from the ground up for that specific purpose .

Upgraded Hardware and Processing Power

Under the hood, the new models boast significant technical upgrades to support faster processing and smoother user experiences . Federal Communications Commission filings indicate that the glasses will support the Wi-Fi 6 UNII-4 band, a powerful wireless connectivity feature absent from previous generations . This upgraded connectivity allows for high-speed data transfers, which could dramatically improve response times for artificial intelligence queries and potentially support robust livestreaming capabilities .

Despite the advanced internal technology, the exterior design remains heavily focused on delivering a traditional eyewear experience . There is no current indication that these new prescription glasses will feature a visual head-up display . Instead, the focus remains primarily on audio interactions, voice command interfaces, and discreet camera functionalities .

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously hinted at this strategic product direction during an earnings call earlier this year . He noted that billions of people worldwide wear glasses or contacts for vision correction, comparing the current wearable market landscape to the rapid transition from flip phones to smartphones . According to Zuckerberg, it is incredibly hard to imagine a world in the near future where most everyday glasses are not equipped with some form of artificial intelligence .

Fresh Colors for the Existing Lineup

Alongside the new prescription-focused hardware launch, the company is also refreshing its existing smart eyewear lineup with a variety of new colorways and lens combinations . The Ray-Ban Skyler frames will soon be available in a shiny transparent peach finish paired with Transitions brown lenses . The Headliner frame adds a matte transparent peach option with Transitions grey lenses, and the popular Wayfarer introduces a shiny transparent grey paired with Transitions sapphire lenses .

The Oakley Vanguard line is also receiving a substantial aesthetic update . New market options include vanguard black with Prizm black lenses, vanguard white with Prizm rose gold lenses, and vanguard black with Prizm Transitions ember lenses . Additionally, the Oakley HSTN frames will feature fresh combinations, including a black frame with Prizm dark golf lenses and a light curry frame paired with clear-to-brown Transitions lenses .

New Artificial Intelligence Features

These major hardware announcements are accompanied by software updates that bring much more powerful artificial intelligence capabilities to the entire ecosystem . A new AI-powered nutrition tracking feature allows users to log their meals hands-free using simple voice commands or by snapping a quick photo of their plate . The system automatically captures key nutritional details, adds them to a digital food log, and delivers highly personalized insights over time to encourage healthier lifestyle choices .

A new WhatsApp message summary and recall tool is also entering the Early Access Program for users to test . Wearers can prompt the system to catch them up on unread messages, generating instant, hands-free audio summaries of busy group chats . They can also ask specific contextual questions about recent text conversations, such as recalling dinner suggestions from a friend . These interactions are processed locally on the device and secured with end-to-end encryption to maintain strict user privacy .

Finally, an innovative feature called Neural Handwriting is rolling out to the existing Meta Ray-Ban Display product line in the coming weeks . This technology enables users to literally write with a finger on any physical surface to reply to text messages silently and discreetly . The feature is universally compatible across major digital platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and native messaging applications on both Android and iOS devices .
